Xanten - Colonia Ulpia Traiana
Most of the remains and discoveries on display at the LVR Xanten Archaeological Park and Roman Museum were found here. A wide range of reconstructions (here: artisans’ dwellings), interactive displays and other learning resources give a vivid picture of life in ancient Rome and enhance the learning experience.
Traces of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, one of the two settlements in the province of Lower Germany which acquired the highest status of a Roman city, can still be seen at the LVR Xanten Archäologischen Park (APX) near Xanten The city’s construction and development was closely linked to nearby Castra Vetera, a large legionary fortress. The most significant structural remains found in the area of Colonia Ulpia Traiana include settlements, their bath houses, temples and amphitheatre, the Limes-Straße road, a port and the Tricensima fortification. This was built at the centre of the city during the later period of the Roman Empire. The site is unusual in that not much has been built over it. It is now home to the Xanten Archaeological Park and its many reconstructions.
Access: private, public,
Note:
The archaeological remains that make up the Lower Germanic Limes (NGL) UNESCO World Heritage Site are all very well preserved. Most of these structures are buried underground and well protected. Some are visible above ground. So far, there is very little on-site information explaining the history and significance of these finds. We are currently working on a comprehensive package of information and presentation resources to promote public understanding of these sites.
