Kalkar-Kalkarberg
Panoramic view of the ancient shrine
A sacrificial altar dedicated to the native Germanic war goddess Vagdavercustis lies near Kalkarberg. The goddess was also honoured by Roman troops. The altar remained there from the 1st to the 4th century AD. It was close to the Burginatium cavalry barracks but was also within easy reach for the Roman legionaries stationed in Xanten. Evidence for a Gallo-Roman temple, another religious building and residential accommodation has also been found in the area of the shrine.
Access: private and public
Note:
The archaeological remains that make up the Lower Germanic Limes (NGL) UNESCO World Heritage Site are all very well preserved. Most of these structures are buried underground and well protected. Some are visible above ground. So far, there is very little on-site information explaining the history and significance of these finds. We are currently working on a comprehensive package of information and presentation resources to promote public understanding of these sites.
